Reinventing The Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) Experience

Blog Details
Every day, health plans provide their members with essential non-emergency transportation (NEMT) services to and from the care they need. Without reliable transportation, as many as 30% of all medical appointments are missed or delayed each year. This absence creates a costly downstream effect on health plans, health care providers, and their members.

The unique transportation industry that serves this need operates in a largely manual cycle with some of the lowest customer satisfaction ratings. The lack of reliable and HIPAA-compliant technology has forced transportation providers and brokers to depend on manual processes to schedule and manage member rides. The gaps created in this human workflow consistently leads to rides being late, too early or missed altogether. These problems add additional inefficiencies that nullify the downstream improvement members and health plans want.

SafeRide Health’s team decided to address this problem with fresh eyes from a technology perspective. To start an intelligent system was required so we built a new platform from the ground up where dispatchers can easily document, schedule and manage rides seeing the unique capabilities of each vehicle and driver from an entire network of NEMTs, rideshare providers and other transport options. Next we built a platform to document the unique requirements of health plan members and integrate it with an intelligent database of benefits offered by health plans. Then we engineered an advanced algorithm to interface these HIPAA-compliant platforms allowing for simple and transparent transportation benefit management. Finally, we built a reporting engine to share how transportation is being utilized and impacting health outcomes.
